Imagine turning used tea bags into beautiful works of art. That's exactly what Ruby Silvious does! Inspired by her family history and a passion for fashion, this talented artist uses deconstructed tea bags to create stunning pieces that are both unique and environmentally conscious. With a grandmother who was a skilled seamstress and experience working at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, Ruby has the perfect background for bringing her creative visions to life. Her method involves printing, staining, and assembling the flattened tea bag segments together, resulting in intricately designed garments and accessories that are simply breathtaking.
Ruby has collected bins of used tea bags from friends and family, and has made more than ten full-sized kimonos requiring up to 800 bags each.
In her recent series, she uses an average of 75 to 125 sachets per garment, each one emptied, flattened, and ironed before being assembled into shirts, slips, or child-size dresses. Some tea bags even have mono prints on them, while others are delicately assembled with plain or slightly stained bags, creating a fragile and stunning look. Ruby's works can be found on her website and Instagram, showcasing her unique ability to turn everyday objects into extraordinary art.
